Operations, or “Ops”, refers to the various actions and decisions made by participants and members of a business that affect production, distribution, service, management, and more—things needed for a company to function. DevOps – Development Operations represents a change in IT culture, focusing on rapid IT service delivery through the adoption of agile, lean practices in the context of a system-oriented approach. DevOps emphasizes people (and culture), and it seeks to improve collaboration between operations and development teams. DevOps implementations utilize technology — especially automation tools that can leverage an increasingly programmable and dynamic infrastructure from a life cycle perspective. (Gartner)
FinOps – Finance Operations is an evolving cloud financial management discipline and cultural practice that enables organizations to get maximum business value by helping engineering, finance, technology, and business teams to collaborate on data-driven spending decisions. (FinOps Foundation)
MLOps – Machine Learning Operations is an approach to managing the entire lifecycle of a machine learning model — including its training, tuning, everyday use in a production environment, and retirement. (Technopedia)
NetOps – Network Operations is a strategy that focuses on maximizing agility, velocity, and automation. It can encompass many roles, processes, and protocols within an organization’s network operation center, and serves to benefit employees and end users by delivering optimal network performance. RevOps – Revenue Operations is the strategic integration of sales, marketing, and service departments to provide a better end-to-end view to administration and management while leaving day-to-day processes within the departments. The holistic approach of revenue ops is designed to break down silos between departments. As digital customer experience evolves, the need for various departments to share information has grown; revenue ops is the strategy to bring them all together and more precisely measure the return on investment (ROI) in those departments. SecOps – Security Operations is the seamless collaboration between IT Security and IT Operations to effectively mitigate risk. SecOps team members assume joint responsibility and ownership for any security concerns, ensuring that security is infused into the entire operations cycle. (BMC)
AIOps – Artificial Intelligence Operations combines big data and machine learning to automate IT operations processes, including event correlation, anomaly detection, and causality determination. (Gartner)
ChatOps – Chat Operations is the use of chat clients, chatbots, and real-time communication tools to facilitate how software development and operation tasks are communicated and executed. In a ChatOps environment, the chat client serves as the primary communication channel for ongoing work. (TechTarget)
DataOps – Data Operations is the hub for collecting and distributing data, with a mandate to provide controlled access to systems of record for customer and marketing performance data, while protecting privacy, usage restrictions, and data integrity. (Gartner)
DevSecOps – Development Security Operations is the integration of security into emerging agile IT and DevOps development as seamlessly and as transparently as possible. Ideally, this is done without reducing the agility or speed of developers or requiring them to leave their development toolchain environment. (Gartner)
ITOps – IT Operations as the people and management processes associated with IT service management to deliver the right set of services at the right quality and at competitive costs for customers. (Gartner)
NetDevOps – Network Development Operations is the practice of applying DevOps principles to the network team. DevOps focuses on reducing the barriers between development and IT operations teams by encouraging greater collaboration and automation. (ZPE)
NoOps – No Operations is the concept that an IT environment can become so automated and abstracted from the underlying infrastructure that there is no need for a dedicated team to manage software in-house. (TechTarget)
SalesOps – Sales Operations is a strategic function charged with supporting, enabling, and driving effective sales objectives, strategies, and programs. (Gartner)
ServiceOps – Service Operations is a new business technology strategy that combines IT service management (ITSM) with IT operations management (ITOM). ServiceOps is fundamentally about connecting people, processes, and technology that are dependent on one another to enable successful service delivery and make user experiences better with automation, collaboration, and visibility across traditionally fragmented departments. TestOps – Test Operations is the process of using automation to centralize and streamline the planning, monitoring, and testing of your software development. The idea is to turn disjointed, siloed teams and processes into a well-oiled engine that allows you to produce better software, faster, and with fewer bugs. (Katalon)
ValueOps – Value Operations is a strategy for IT operations that offers a holistic set of frameworks, methodologies, and philosophies to enable I&O leaders to implement the appropriate operations processes based upon the needs of the business by leveraging Gartner’s Pace-Layered Application Strategy.
